What music/musicians inspire me to write?

I have so many musicians that have helped me write over the past several years!
I am a big fan of a lot of different genres and it really all depends on what kind of mood I am in.

When I was writing the poetry for my book Claiming Kristopher, I had just gone through a breakup. Listening to rap is a great most days but during that period of time artists like Eminem, Tupac, Lil Wayne and Ace Hood put out some of the best music in which I felt I could relate to.

“I got ice in my veins, blood in my eyes, hate in my heart, love in my mind. I seen nights full of pain, days are the same. You keep the sunshine, save me the rain. I search but never find, hurt but never cry, I work and forever try but I’m cursed, so never mind. And it’s worse but better times seem further and beyond. The top gets higher the more I climb.” Lil Wayne – Drop the World

I had been experiencing a lot back then being bi-sexual, single parent, and just going through my first serious breakup. I had a lot of hate. I also felt that people just didn’t want to understand me. So I poured all my anger and hurt into my writing.

These days I am much happier. Even though I can still get lost in a real inspirational rap song, I tend to listen to a variety of music and musicians. I do however love 90s music and alternative music like Ria Mae and my current favourite Alessia Cara. The lyrics to Alessia’s music are beautiful and I imagine a lot of people can relate to them. There is nothing better than finding an artist that isn’t afraid to speak from the heart and touch on subjects that are not superficial!

Until next time.
